The big news
Bye bye Matt Smith then! Confirmed as leaving after the 50th anniversary and Xmas Specials.
I'm saddened of course; I love Matt's take on the role, and feel a deeper affection for his Doctor then I ever did for Tennant's, who always seemed to belong more to Rose than to the audience. And there's always a petulant part of me which insists that they're always leaving too soon (although crunching the numbers on this suggests that - at around 2000 standardly-televised minutes in the role thus far - Matt Smith's tenure is almost as long as Tennant's is and longer than Peter Davidson.*
But this is the nature of the show, and a key ingredient to what's keeping it fresh.
Jenna-Louise Coleman and Moffat are both allegedly still signed on for the next proper season, which will now feature Doctor #12. Allegedly this'll start in August and run straight in to the Christmas special in 2014, which will also serve as season finale.
Start your speculation engines on who'll be Twelth, of course. (Or is it 13th now, come to think, with all the John Hurt business? Hmmm.) I heard someone say Helen Mirren wants to do it, which would be fabulous of course, but no chance. No possibility John Hurt really IS the new Doctor, surely? A few yuksters are suggesting that Tennant will come back into the role, which, lol no.
* Those Doctor tenures in full, in terms of total number of regularly televised minutes (with a few assumptions), including all the TV stories but not anything weird (like TARDISODES, internet promos, Comic Relief extra bits, stuff done for Jim'll Fix It and whatnot):
Obv. Matt's number will go up a bit - by around 180 minutes or so? - after the 50th anniversary and Xmas specials.
